Fleas in students apartments

Posted by:

Students are getting settled in for the new academic year. One of the pitfalls of those empty houses over the long summer however is the unwanted inhabitants which have been laying dormant, waiting for a blood host. Houses which may have a cat visit or live there may have fleas. The fleas can lay dormant for a number of weeks… awaiting a blood host. The vibrations of people moving around the property will entice out the fleas, causing nasty bites and irritation. This was just the case at a property I have just treated.

At this time of year there are no active wasp nests, just queens which will begin to look for a suitable place to build their new nests.

Rats need only the basics to survive.

Food Water Harbourage.

In spite of scare mongering claims that Rats are everywhere and cant be controlled, this isn’t exactly true. Rats require somewhere to live, water and food source. Take these away and remove the problem. Admittedly there may be instances where this is harder, however there are simple suggestions.

Don t leave out rubbish in bags.

Close doors on bin stores.

Block gaps with wire mesh or Rodent stop.

Ensure drainage systems are closed off.

Fix any leaking pipes.

Clear any overgrown areas.

Gerbils may be the largest cause of black death

Posted by:

25/02/15 Source BBC News

Black rats may not have been to blame for numerous outbreaks of the bubonic plague across Europe, a study suggests.

Scientists believe repeat epidemics of the Black Death, which arrived in Europe in the mid-14th Century, instead trace back to gerbils from Asia.

Prof Nils Christian Stenseth, from the University of Oslo, said: “If we’re right, we’ll have to rewrite that part of history.”

Rats and Mice – using airbricks as a front door

Posted by:

As winter is in full swing, as are the rodents wishing to enter your property. The majority of call outs we get here at AntiVerm are due to ‘proofing’ issues. Gaps in mortar, under doorways and poorly fitted structural repairs. Mice can get through airbricks. At AntiVerm we recommend ‘Mousemesh’ in preventing mice accessing properties.

Pest control ‘smoke bombs’ prompt ‘false alarms’ warning

Posted by:

11/01/15 Source BBC News

A number of emergency call outs to properties being fumigated with pest control “smoke bombs” has prompted a warning from Dorset Fire Service.

It has recently attended nine properties in areas including Poole.

The service said neighbours were not warned before the devices were set off.

It is asking people who wish to use them to contact residents in advance to avoid “false alarms”. British Pest Control Association (BPCA) described them as “aggressive” products.

Straight out of a nightmare: 5,000 brown recluse spiders inside home

Posted by:

13/10/14 Source Fox news

‘A family bought the home in 2008 and later found out it was infested with what a spider expert estimated to be 5,000 brown recluse spiders. The family sued the previous owners, saying they were not informed of the spider problem. The house eventually went into foreclosure. An expert on brown recluse spiders said the creature’s bite can be very serious depending on how much venom is injected.’

Luckily for us this isn’t in the UK, however the number of reported spider bites from venomous spiders in the UK does appear to be on the rise.
